I think you can use rsync to keep the files on your Windows machine.
Don’t try to use this file location by default.
One more thing, though. You can try to mount (by updating your fstab) the “D:\attachments” folder into a subfolder under /public/files/ and use my trick over here to keep the files in this location (be careful with permissions though…). This just might work…
