Version 16 or the latest UI is a step backwards. What was one click now becomes three. How is this better in any way?
It started with version 15. I hated it, and stayed on v-14 for as long as I could, until they brought custom block in workspaces. Same story in version-16 unfortunately ![]()
Imagine you’re showing ERPNext to a friend, or your stakeholders and you keep getting lost in the navigation mess and noone’s gonna want your software.
What Frappe framework offers is freaking awesome. It’s strong, capable, though bit dull. But it’s a framework and you build on it and make it pretty. What ERPNext brings is too much. It’s a mess. Navigation is a perfect representation of it. I believe that’s why they branched out HR, CRM, etc etc to their own.
The new desktop reminds me of the apps switcher in odoo. Ironically this is something I disliked about Odoo’s enterprise navigation, and I preferred the navigation of its community edition, which drops down all the apps instead of going back to the main apps switcher. However if you’re a seasoned user of the software, you’d use search bar for everything, but for new users it can require more navigation as they use mouse for everything and are not familiar with shortcuts like command+G in erpnext or command+K in odoo.
Trying out Beta 2, althought the reorganisation of the individual workspaces looks better I’m not a fan of the new navigation switcher/start.
It feels very disjointed.
Why are some sections coloured and a single click takes you to that section but others like Accounts you don’t get the option and have to select a sub entry?
Once you are in the section, you have to go back to the Desktop, then select the next section you want. I feel a drop down option would be faster/better.
Also, why choose a 4 column layout for the Your Shortcuts at the top but then a 3 column layout for the Reports & Masters below. Look really odd and truncates some entries unnecessarily.
I hope the new UI/UX improves considerably more, because at the moment it’s not very user friendly.
The Subcontracting menu is a case in point for so much truncation that the shortcuts lose meaning
When expanded to 3 columns they are at least mostly visible
I had the exact same impression when I tested v16 and feel the same way. ODOO navigation is horrible and I feel ERPNext is moving in that direction.
I do hope the Frappe team are reading and listening to the feedbacks on this UI change
The release candidate has already been announced, so as far as I understand, no major changes can be made at this point.
In a post, I saw a comment from @avc (you have the info
) that led me to believe there was a PR in the works, but I don’t think so.
I have not the info, just have the feeling ![]()
I have created a site on my Frappe Cloud account and had a look around and I have to agree with many of the comments. The navigation is not good. Its actually a bit of a mess .. Sorry Devs! One thing that is obvious right from the start is the speed. Somewhere I read that the speed is up by ~ 2 x ?? and although I did not measure this, the difference is obvious.
I will have to create issues for all the things that I have seen but just to mention one or two things …
The awesome bar is now two clicks away. I am used to it being on the top, ALWAYS
The only way to get to “home” would seem to be , to add "/home” to the /desktop URL ???
I’m going to leave this comment, which may be useful to many. Just as I mentioned @avc and was able to raise an issue in develop (due to the Python 3.14 problem), there were changes.
When I saw the first beta, I was really hoping for some kind of magic PR because I didn’t understand how the navigation, which was very confusing, was going to be fixed. I think that today (develop updated to the latest commit) that has changed.
The first change that makes a difference is the lack of extra sidebars, which I think was the biggest dilemma. Now it feels much more natural.
-The search bar on the left takes some getting used to, but it goes hand in hand with the ones in apps (CRM), and it will be a matter of using the quick command Cmd + K more.
-I can’t quite decide if the desktop access icon is good, but it serves its purpose.
-The change of the menus back to the top, leaving user issues only at the bottom, is appreciated.
-Search engine on the desktop.
-Possibility of starting directly in a workspace.
-I’m not entirely convinced by the saved filters, but without them, the space for data is cleaner and more spacious.
I found it much more usable; the sidebars are definitely a great extra once you get the hang of them.
There are many corrections that add up, and now I can see that it will improve.
I think what needs improvement is access to the modules so that it is just one click (instead of a two-click submenu), which has already been raised in the list of issues by someone from Frappe.
I hope this helps those who were concerned like me when we saw the first version.
I read a lot of this “Command[/er/ing/eering/Master?/Elite?] key lately (e.g. december updates, which I like all editions of).
What is this? I don’t have it on the many different keyboards I use.
So how do I even find this “Commando K” thing? Is there a way to access help for finding this key?
What does it correspond to on “normal” keyboards? Ctrl? Strg?Alt?Alt Gr?Scroll?S-Abf?Unterbr?Pause?”Four-Trapezoids”?
Is this a sign to a switch to a system made for specialist’s hardware?
To the announced Frappe Appliance’s parlance?
A sign to UX testing with uncharted territories?
Love!
Edit:
I found out not: Even the biggest most pseudointelligent computer cluster conglomerate in the universe only can say this (emphasissies as copy-pasted): “Overview with AI \n On a Windows keyboard, the equivalent of the macOS Cmd+K shortcut is typically Ctrl+K, used for inserting hyperlinks or opening command/search palettes in many modern apps, though some apps might use Windows key + K for screen casting or different combinations like Alt+K for specific functions. The specific function depends heavily on the application, but Ctrl+K is the closest common Windows counterpart to Cmd+K for general actions“
Please note the terms “typically” (not each time), “many” (not all), “though [other apps might use somekey else]”, “Windows key”, “Alt”, “depends heavily on the app”.
So we are in fact talking about two different UI paradigms. In other words, depending on what the respective dev is used to use, this tech-cultural difference might generate confusions in the UX for users of other UI paradigms.
_(“Ctrl”) is "Strg”, which might be the answer, depending on how the app in question actually does it. Does this reside in FrappeFramework, or does every app’s cook do their own thing? Not sure yet, as far as I’m concerned. Does every app document its keyboard bindings in the relevant kbd top languages? And how do I get this list if even the meta key isn’t clear?
Ah, y++ starts with funny conundrums.
wtf men
overally l think this is great , we needed the home page something like odoo , and the sidebar its a great plus+++ then the only issue that when you want to go to home to have to click two times but am sure that can be easily corrected , otherwise the team have done a great job keep it up
Just installed RC2 for testing - and I am confused / concerned about the status of UI changes. I do not see any links to any of the Modules or a link to ERPNext on the desk…it feels like a prototype. Are there further changes coming to UI prior to the final release? Or will the UI upgrades be released later?
Consider the massive resources available to a company like Microsoft. Then consider some of their final releases (Window ME, Windows Vista, Windows 8). We are all entitled to (hopefully learn from) our mistakes ![]()
Windows ME
Ouch! Somehow I’ve deleted this from my head, till today! ![]()
Hello,
There was some issue with RC2, which has been fixed.
Please switch to the latest develop branch of Frappe Framework & ERPNext, which should have the desktop like this:
Hello Francis,
The UX has been improved by the team, a new desktop icon is introduced in the breadcrumb which when clicked takes you directly to the desktop.
I really hope there will be a one-or-two click path back to site_url/desk/home. It is where I land after logging in, but afterwards I find myself often clicking into the address bar to type it in.
