Does erpnext supercede books? I see that in the github tags erpnext says “accounting”.

The way I understand it: -
Frappe Books is a completely seperate app (desktop based on Electron) and is much more limited than ERPNext (web-server based) and cannot integrate with Frappe framework and other apps (HR, Education, Helpdesk, CRM, etc..)
Use Books only for simple isolated accounting
