[V16] Routing vs BOM ambiguity

I’m trying to get my head around how V16 routing/BOM interactions occur. I don’t like the fact that it seems that routing and BOM carry the same info (more or less) in different forms, this ambiguity creates conflict. The BOMs in my case were created with time/cost associated way before routing was investigated, and it seems the routing now can be arbitrary and a duplicate of data entry effort? Why can’t the routing just drag in the BOM contents and remain linked, that way the BOM is the point of truth for cost and operations?

Maybe I’m misunderstanding how it’s meant to work.

Is there a better place to ask than here? This place seems dead.

A Routing is just a reusabe set of operations. A BOM carries multiple other things like raw materials, secondary items etc.

The point of routing is if you use a same set of operations across different BOMs/materials. I am not sure if I understand your question.

Hi,

This is the good place to ask.

If you have already configured the BOM with Operations, you don’t need to create the routing, as you said it will be the duplicate data entry.

Let’s say you may have multiple routing for one BOM in that case routing will be useful. You can create the BOM without operation and during the work order you can select the required routing for the operaiton part.

Hope I am able to throw some lights, if you need any further clarification, happy to help.

I understand BOMs, but we are talking about the operations in the BOM. My point is that the BOM contains operations. These are, for example, pre-costed, timed and reviewed before entry in to the BOM. It’s the “truth” of the assembly costing. But if you want to use the routing cards, which is really the whole point of the planning aspect of ERP, you need to *re-enter* the same operations that are in the BOM, in a new location.

This can lead to duplication, and worse, ambiguity and inconsistency, opens you up to person A entering the BOM info but person B entering the routing info incorrectly. Or someone updating the routing info without reviewing the BOM operations.

In essence I believe the routing should contain DIRECT reference to the BOM operations. It can contain non-costed items in addition, but nothing more or less. If you have the routing able to add (for extreme example) 8 operations when the BOM has 4, the planning has absolutely no link to the reality that was priced in the BOM and created by the engineering team.
