Account Type, how does it work?

I’m new and curious about how ERPNext and account types. I guess that the types are used by the system to create automatic accounting entries, for example, when creating a purchase order, etc.

  1. Is that correct? account types are used for mapping transactions into accounting?
  2. if so, is it also used for reporting, what numbers should be where in the dashboard?
  3. Is there a list of the account types used and what they are for?
