Best practice for Manufacturing for Small Business

Hi there,

I am new to Erpnext, and since I have already recognized its immense versatility, I am equally somewhat at a loss regarding the best setup for our purposes.

Suppose we have various raw materials from which different products are manufactured.

If I now want to plan the production of, for example, 10 different products that are all made from the same raw materials in varying quantities, how could I determine in advance the quantities I can produce, taking into account the available raw materials?

Which entitiy is the one that would evaluate the possible production quantities or give an overview in dependence to the available raw materials? Would that be the workorders?

thx in advance

A BOM (Bill of Materials) is your “recipe” for manufacturing a product. You’ll enter the required raw materials to make one finished product.

There is a limitation in ERPNext that expects the output of one product. The typical workaround is to use waste output for the “other” products.

A BOM can contain operations using workstations that will output into a job card.

If you can limit your BOMs to a single output item would be best, even if your production plan includes simultaneous production of multiple items.

Hi,

One thing to keep in mind when asking the question: It’s irrelevant if you have a small or big business. What matters is the type of production you will be handling. I’ll give you an example of my case:

I manufacture garments. Lets say I make a pant, which has a list of materials (bill of materials or BOM) and how much of each I will require. But now the same pant has different variants such as colors and sizes. Lets say I work 6 Sizes (S, M, L, XL, 2xl, 3XL) and 4 colors. Thats 24 BOMs that I need to maintain. And after this production is done, I will not use this BOM again, as fashion has changed and so has the requirement from the customer. Hence working on a BOM is too much overkill in my particular use case. So I was able to quickly develope Doctypes specific to my use case. With very low level client side scripting (without any access to the server or code) I was able to get a very polished and professional custom solution built.

Now my case wont’ be the same as everyone else. For example if you are making futrniture, or bottles BOMs are great.

Going to your specific question how can I determine how much I can make. Well ERPNext has some planning functionalities but this will require you to feed it data as to what you intend on manufacturing. Based on this it will tell you how much you need.

Now there are two options here: You can either reserve a raw material for a production. Or you can request more materials to be purchased. In terms of predicting I admint ERPNext is a bit lacking. Based on your usage there are some reports in Stock module that can help you predict demand, but they aren’t great.

Sorry I know it doesn’t answer your question exactly. But wanted to clarify few things.
