Cannot open DocType when its instance is open - issue?

I was trying to customize the address fields form - so when I pressed the > to goto the doctype it showed me "Cannot open DocType when its instance is open"

How can I resolve this issue?

DOn't do customization directly through DocType, if you do that you always have to fix conflict whenever we make any changes in that doctype.

To add custom fields, go to Setup -> Custom Field and to change any property of a field, go to Setup -> Customize Form. If you want to add custom script, you can do that from Setup -> Custom Script.

I am customizing forms via setup > customize form option.

Now below :

If I click on that arrow and then edit it in doctype then that's an incorrect way -  you mean?

Yes, thats an incorrect way, it will open the particular doctype. Instead, when you select Address in Customize Form, all the fields will be pulled in below table. And you should change any property from there.
