Cannot select primary contact for any customer even though multiple contacts for the customer exist

I need to select a default primary contact for the customer. However nothing appears in the autocomplete list.

The contact needs to be ticked as ’ is a primary contact’ to show in this list. Normal contacts that do not have this tick are not shown here
