Can't Customize the Desk at all in ERPNext 16

I can’t create workspace, the button “Add Workspace” on the top right is missing

Searching for “Desktop Icon” in the Awesome Bar or global search returns no results at all. However, manually navigating to /desk/desktop-icon/ does load the Desktop Icon list, and I’m able to open the Desktop Icon form. I’ve tried creating and editing icons using all available options (External, Workspace Sidebar, Link, Folder, App). In all cases, saving succeeds without errors, but no visible change appears on the Desk. Editing existing Desktop Icons also has no effect. The only action that consistently works is hiding an icon — any other modification (link, label, type, workspace, app, etc.) simply does nothing.

While I can create a Workspace Sidebar, it doesn’t seem to attach to anything unless it’s linked to a Desktop Icon, and without that link it effectively counts as “none.” This makes me wonder whether I’m missing a required step or permission. For context, this is on the 14-day free trial running ERPNext v16.1

I’m noticing the same things. I can’t seem to organize things the way one would expect. Creating a Desk Icon of type ‘folder’ doesn’t seem to do anything. I can see it in the Desk Icon list, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to show it on the main desk. I can hide icons, but trying to create folders just doesn’t seem to work.

I’ve looked for a simple tutorial, but can’t seem to find one. Could someone who understands how this is supposed to work help out with a tutorial or a link to some more documentation on this? The official documentation is sparse unfortunately.
