ERPNext Premium?

Dear Users,

Seeing so many suggestions, good ideas on the forum and GitHub, I was wondering if we could have a premium plan for ERPNext. Here is what it would be like:

$5000 for 30 man-days of feature development. (?)

Will there be enough takers for this? If we find 3-4 takers, we could start hiring and training a resource straight away.

best,
Rushabh

So this means that we commit $5000 for 30 man-days and then you could develop the features as per our request and bill us in Man-Days and when the specified Man-Days expire we would need to renew, let me know if that is what is meant by ERPNext Premium.

If that is the case then we could think on these lines.

Aditya,

Thanks for the interest! I was looking at it as pre-paid - for one year. This way it helps us to hire / allocate resources.

This is a good idea. My main questions are:

1. what 30 man-days actually gets you. (what does one man-day get you? is that 24 hours or 8 hours?) May be a hard offer to wrap your head around, especially for non-devs.
2. will the features be added to the main erpnext codebase?

What about wrapping this the other way around, a bit like a bounty, but more focussed on the actual users requests. Can weight out the effort required
to implement a particular feature, specially by normalizing the feature requests. Then a user can choose to pay for the feature to get it quickly (Prepaid or Postpaid is another question to sort out here) or users can wait for other users to join a particular feature and get it cheaper but  later.

Just paying 5K up front for 30 Days does not really tell me what I'm getting. Or do you think we have the 30days exclusive for us? Even then I dint no what I get after
30 Days...

just my 2ct...

Holger is going in perfectly good direction.

Let's put some "price" on GitHub items, in "man-days".

You can also prepare some kind of "accounts" connected to GitHub items. People can put donation in specific account and after required man-days is "donated" you will be able to finish that.

This approach will be very cost-effective, efficient and democratic :)

I've tried this. See Github and Bountysource. Not getting much traction, unfortunately.

I think this is the main disconnect between us users and what Rushabh is trying to do.

To echo Holger's point, if I understood correctly -- it would be helpful to have dev team tag a $ price on each feature request. This will go a long way in solving the disconnect I mention.

Dear all,

Thanks for the feedback.

The $5k was more from a budgeting perspective - the current resources are all blocked into fixing show stoppers + things that seem priority from our perspective - like performance issues, deployment etc. I was thinking about what could be a good way to speed up product development, specially for features.

Was also looking at it from a market perspective. Most larger small to midsize companies who are seriously looking for an ERP have a budget of $5k + . I know they have many options at that price point too.

I agree there is ambiguity in terms of what 30 days gets you. My view was that for that amount, you get to control how ERPNext gets developed - for 30 days of one developer, could be anyone from us, including myself. This would not be customization but a way of setting higher priority on the issue list. How much can we cover in 30 days, obviously it depends on the type of issues - I think we are reasonably quick in terms of turn-around.

Regarding Holger's suggestions on bounties, its just that the initial traction has not been good enough. Maybe the bounty sums are not attractive. Very good developers would like to work at $100 per hour or so, plus there is no guarantee of continuing income if someone decides to specialize into the product unless they already have projects.

I am quite happy, with us plugging away at our own pace. I was just testing if there is a greater need for speed.

In the end, I also realize this will depend on how fast the community grows and the multiplier effect it will bring. (More users = more developers) So maybe we should also do some community building efforts, but I am not sure what they could be.

best,
Rushabh

I am definitely not part of the group of companies who could spend $5000. We would be bankrupt. This shows however that ERPNEXT is (also) attractive to micro-enterprises, and there are many of these. Erpnext functionality in the cloud would be close to $ 100/month in NL.
The markt is huge: Mamut claims 400,000 customers, Releezee would cost me , with erpnext functionality some euro 70 per month

AHMEDABAD: Online accounting software provider, Reeleezee, a Dutch company, today announced the launch of its services in India.

"With mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) becoming just as important as desktops, launch of our web based accounting services will cater to the needs of SMEs in India," Wilko Storks, Co-founder of Reeleezeetold reporters. See also : http://www.reeleezee.in/en

So, the market is big and Indian enterprises like Erpnext have customers in NL and , I guess, Reeleezee has customers in India. They claim some 40,000 customers in NL.

The community of this type of software is very international and veried. I speculate that Erpnext users have a few things in common: 1) go of the beaten track/experimental (this is shown by only one NL customer , a few germans, and so on), 2) price-conscious 3)cloud oriented.

But is this correct?? The Erpext community only communicates thru the groups. Out of curiosity i sometimes look at the website of erpnext users if i know it. So for those interested we could have an other medium so we get a somewhat better insight in who else is using erpnext. Do not know whether there is an interest in this.

Going from users to wishes and from wishes to development. Erpnext staff may have an insight were the wishes are. Maybe I should analyse github better, but right now i have little feeling for what the average erpnext user wants (more)  I believe there are may be more appealing platforms to monitor the interest in new features.

Once these common interest are well defined, and users know each other (a bit) it may be become easier to raise money for new functionality. These functionalities may be defined geographically. EU countries have quite similar administrative rules.  A buying process in EU administrative software runs in the opposite direction as ERPNEXT. One starts with linking or importing the bank statements, and than associates this with a purchase.

Well, may be slightly off-topic, but generally linked to "financing new developments", rgds robert

Robert,

Thanks for the feedback.

You are right the community is very varied and diverse (both in terms of usage and geography) so its hard to find a platform other than this forum to bring everyone together.

Why people would use ERPNext is an interesting question. I think right now there *so many* options out there that ERPNext gets lost in the middle. Currently the average ERPNext users are small business owners and also to larger small businesses 30+ / 50+ employees or small mid-size businesses 100+ employees (very few).

Maybe this is not yet the right time for a premium plan because most users are probably okay with the pace of development.

From our end, revenues are growing very slowly - and we may not break even this year either, from the way things are going. There is absolutely no chance we can increase resources in the next 8 to 10 months. I still think the best way to fund development is from the users. If the users are happy - I think there should be no need for special development.

Regarding features like Bank Statement upload, its a great idea, but not a requirement from most users so far. Will add it to GitHub though!

best,
Rushabh

Dear Users,

Seeing so many suggestions, good ideas on the forum and GitHub, I was wondering if we could have a premium plan for ERPNext. Here is what it would be like:

$5000 for 30 man-days of feature development. (?)

Will there be enough takers for this? If we find 3-4 takers, we could start hiring and training a resource straight away.

best,

Sad to hear that the economics are still harsh......Any idea how many users just download and do not pay anything.....??

Will add it to GitHub though!

best,
Rushabh

Well, I support the idea of the Premium model. And I understand this model requires more than just one customer, so hopefully other folks here will support this.

It's been about a month -- anyone else here want to do the Premium model?

Everytime we do manual procedures to get the business results we need, I realize it is likely to be more worth it to invest in automating them by improving the ERPnext backend.
