How to have custom item fields based on item group

Hi all,

I am new to ERPNext so I apologise if this question is a bit dumb… hopefully not!

I have different items that on time have different attributes based on their nature. For instance: I have solar inverters and solar panels.
Whenever a client may look for an inverter, parameters as Output Power, Single/Split Phase, number of MPPT Trackers available, etc. may be of interest while searching.

On the other hand, when looking for a solar panles, other values like peak power, max current or max output voltage will be of interest and they may want to filter based on those attributes.

These differs from “item variants” since they may come from different suppliers and may use different underlaying technologies and even component quality.

Would it be possible to have different fields on item creation based on the Item Group value? Also, would those parameters be searchable once the category has been pre-filtered? Ideally, Sub-groups would share and inherit common fields.

You can add the custom field and set the parameters “depends on” to show or hide based on your Item Group.
