How to Record Phone Call with Contact

How do I record a phone call with a contact? Initially, I put a note in the Customer record about the phone call. Then I moved that note to the Contact record instead. Neither seems useful, as if I leave it in the Customer notes, that could get very cluttered very fast, but putting it in the Contact record gives no indication on the Customer screen that there are notes in the Contact’s record.

Is there a standard, best-practice way of noting communication with Contacts?

Maybe create a custom table for this?

That would probably be easy enough. I’m surprised there isn’t an out-of-the-box solution. Can I modify the interface to indicate that a particular record has a quantity of related records? For example, if I build my own table for it, can I indicate on the dashboard that a particular contact has X notes, or maybe indicate the date of the most recent note?
