I’m currently using Frappe Framework v15.44.2 (version-15), and I want to update it to the latest version. I tried running bench update, but it doesn’t seem to update Frappe.
Can someone guide me on the proper steps to upgrade Frappe to the latest version

No, it will only revert the changes you haven’t saved in the repository of your custom apps, if you have any.
I indeed did loose data in such a scenario, when I had an app without a proper git repo at another place I duly pushed to. So, have backups and know where your data resides.
