Is It Possible to Update an Existing BOM After It Has Been Submitted in ERPNext?

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding BOM management in ERPNext.

Once a BOM has been submitted, ERPNext does not allow it to be edited. In my case, there are situations where I need to update an existing BOM after submission, such as:

  • Adding or removing raw materials

  • Changing item quantities

  • Updating operations

  • Correcting BOM details

I found that ERPNext recommends Cancel & Amend or creating a new BOM, and the BOM Replace Tool does not update exploded/raw material items.

My question is:

Is there any standard ERPNext feature or recommended approach to update an existing submitted BOM without creating a new BOM or cancelling the existing one?

If not, how do companies typically handle BOM revisions in production environments while maintaining data integrity and history?

Any suggestions or best practices would be greatly appreciated.

ERPNext supports multi-version BOM management and allows multiple BOM versions for the same product to be active at the same time.
