Naming series counter

Hi to all,
I see that setting the naming series in Document naming Setting, the DB table tabSeries save the counter for each series. Instead If I use Document Naming Rule for setting the naming series, there is not the counter saved on this table.

What is the table that store the counter using Document Naming Rule?
What are difference usign these two methods? What’s the best practice?

  1. Counter is stored directly in the tabDocument Naming Rule table.
  2. Document Naming Setting is used when you want to run two separate sequences or counters of a given pattern, you need to have a field called naming_series in your DocType from where user can select multiple patterns. With Document Naming Rule, only one sequence for a doctype will be followed at a time, whichevers priority is higher.
