SKU coding schemes

Hi,

I know that this is off-topic, but is there a good scheme for item coding that can be used?

An SME deals with services, inventories, assets, consumables, and many more. In addition to that, if manufacturing, there are different levels of assemblies and raw materials.

I would like to know whether there is a clever standard that I can follow, before staring my custom naming scheme?
Or, what do you use?

@JoEz hanks that is interesting, I will look into that.
I was more asking whether there is a good industry consensus on this, rather than how ERPNext implements it.
I looked for an off-topic category, where some forums would have for laid back discussion found this place.
