Any progress on this? We can’t delete user added items from the desktop.
Let me press and hold the button before it shakes, and a big red cross comes up for me to delete! 
Or a better way, have a Trash / Bin icon on the Dashboard for me to drag unused icons to!

You can go to the Module from where the icon originates. On the right hand side, there is “Menu” and “Set Desktop Icons”. Then, just unclick the ones you want to disappear.
I have not tried all the possibilities. I had a custom report from Selling Module that I made it appear on the desktop. And I had to go back to the Selling Module to remove them. Once removed, I did not see it anymore as an option.
