Using a non-localhost version MariaDB database

I don’t want to get into the overhead of installing MariaDB on my Mac, since homebrew is asking to me unlink MySQL 8 which I don’t want to.

Is it possible to install ERPNext on my laptop giving a non-localhost URL to the MariaDB instance which I may have on, say, a shared hosting server @ HostGator or at a droplet @ DigitalOcean ?
