I’ve been looking into ERP implementation for manufacturing companies and noticed that the software itself may not be the biggest challenge.
The difficult part seems to be connecting actual factory operations with the ERP system.
For example, how should a manufacturing ERP handle situations such as:
- Production delays affecting delivery schedules
- Material shortages during production
- Changes to BOMs or production orders
- Rejected materials and rework
- Batch and serial-number traceability
- Quality checks at different production stages
- Subcontracting or outside processing
- Actual vs planned production costs
- Multiple warehouses and production locations
I’d like to hear from people who have actually gone through a manufacturing ERP implementation.
What caused the most problems during implementation: technology, data migration, process changes, employee adoption, customization, or something else?
If you were starting an ERP implementation again, what would you do differently?
