Why ERPNext Hosting is Expensive

Why ERPNext Hosting is Expensive , if we compare with other providers like contabo , hetzner cloud clusters , digital ocean . ERPNext looks like it needs to benefit from hosting business this will reduce users on Frappe Cloud . Why cant they just get servers from Contabo at very affordable prices same thing done by Odoo

Hi,

If you consider all the efforts required to manage and maintain the cloud server, frappe cloud is far cheaper compared to any hosting providers you suggested.

Certain frappe plans also include the product warranty. Also, note that the Frappe is using the Quality Hosting providers like Oracle, Google and Amazon AWS which are not cheaper but gives the best infrastructure with better security.

Also, Frappe is earning only from the hosting business. Frappe is not charging any per user license like Odoo.

Thanks,

Contabo is quite very cheap with 99% , the frappe can get more jobs and revenue when using less costly hosting unlike what they are currently doing they prices are not competative at all .

look at those prices , l have been using contabo for 4 years now , l was reffered to contabo on this platform , a lot of people use it .

For you to be mentioning Contabo as an alternative for an Enterprise hosting solution shows you need to stay away from this topic.

No offense intended

I bought a notebook and pencil at the stationary store and it’s been working great for me. I don’t know why you all even bother with an ERP.

I use Contabo only for development and testing—not for production or client projects. The main issue with Contabo is reliability. If the server goes down for any reason, it takes a long time to get support. We often have to raise multiple tickets, and getting the VPS back online can be a frustrating process. This makes it hard to respond to customers quickly.

On the other hand, Frappe Cloud uses reliable servers like AWS and Oracle Cloud, which offer much better uptime and performance. For a live system, even a 5 to 30-minute downtime can seriously impact the customer’s business.

So while cheaper hosting like Contabo can save money, it often leads to more downtime, more maintenance work, and unhappy clients.

Contabo and Hetzner give you a raw server. You are responsible for:

  • Installing and configuring ERPNext
  • Setting up NGINX, MariaDB, Redis, and Supervisord
  • Managing backups, SSL, firewalls, scaling, and updates
  • Troubleshooting crashes or performance issues
  • Ensuring data security and uptime

On the other hand, Frappe Cloud offers a fully managed environment:

  • Pre-configured and optimized ERPNext setup
  • Automated updates, patches, and maintenance
  • Daily backups, disaster recovery, and rollback options
  • One-click app installs, site duplication, and GitHub integration
  • Support from the actual developers of ERPNext (Frappe team)

You’re not just paying for a server—you’re paying for peace of mind, stability, and productivity.

I ran my own setup for months and realized the hidden costs—backups, monitoring, scaling, updates, and downtime stress. Paying for hosting felt way easier than juggling all that myself.

To solve som downtime you may have with Contabo in my cases we live database cloning and among around 100 clients l have , maybe once in 2 months can have a downtime of 3 to 24 hrs for at least 3 cleints

but one way or the other , frappe cloud’s pricing is not competative consindering its not its main business
